Car buyers embrace new EV models as soon as they reach the used market reports Aston Barclay

Car buyers are swiftly embracing the latest EV models when they reach the second-hand market for the first time according to Aston Barclay’s March desirability index.

The index which determines the hottest models being sold across Aston Barclay’s auction network saw 60% of the top 10 used EVs in March taken up by new models launched over the past 24 months.

The Tesla Model Y, Audi Q4, the Polestar, Skoda Enyaq, Vauxhall Mokka X and Fiat 500X all appeared in the index which reinforces the appetite from drivers to get behind the wheel of the latest model of EV.

“Not everyone can afford a new model when it is first launched and instead look out for the car once it reaches the used market at two to three years of age,” explained Nick Thompson, Aston Barclay’s chief customer officer.

“Dealers are specifically targeting these used EVs at auction in the knowledge they will sell quickly once they reach their forecourt. It is another welcome sign that used EVs are starting to behave in a similar way to ICE cars when they reach the used market which will continue to build confidence with both dealers and buyers,” he added.

The Mercedes-Benz EQC topped the March index, closely followed by the Jaguar iPace in second and the Tesla Model 3 and Kia Niro in ninth and tenth place. Generally, dealers continue to buy higher value used EVs like the EQC and iPace to satisfy sold orders while the Tesla Model 3 and Kia Niro are now seen as the stock EV models to park on forecourts to cater for driver demand.

Aston Barclay’s monthly desirability index takes into consideration three key metrics: web views prior to sale, number of physical and online sale bids, and sale price achieved as a percentage of CAP average.
